The ill-fated event that happened a week ago has fuelled the already angry public of Bharat. But the question still remains, "Is there going to be any change for good?"
Being here in chandigarh, I don't see any heat. People, including me, are angry, talking and then back to home in their cozy blankets. Few questions I was asked today, a really valid question, "What result do you expect from such agitation?"; "An agitation in Delhi, may be a few more here and there, will it bring any changes?"; "Crime against women are prevalent all across the nation, then why such hue and cry on this particular incident?"; "Where lies the problem?"; "Where lies the solution (I was suggested education at the foundation level is required)?"
I thought about each question one by one and here is what i feel:
Ans.1: I "expect" a reform in judicial procedure to serve swift and severe justice AND I don't expect any of what I said before to happen, considering the track-record of the government.
Ans.2: Changes? NO.
Ans.3: Because something has happened here which is more than the definition of a gang-rape. Somehow it has hit the sentiments of Delhiites, well that's the simplest way to explain.
Ans.4: Problem: It's us, especially our parents who failed to imbibe the social and ethical values in our core.
Ans.5: Solution: Again, it's us. To be true, this generation can't be changed much, we can have hopes for the next though, IF we pledge to nurture it. And yes, the major foundation is "Morality" and that never comes from education. It comes from family.
Now there is a bit more that I see here. I care more about the unrest than the reason of unrest. It has been two years now since the "Anna Phenomenon" started. People were there, first in thousands then in lakhs and kept on increasing. As a layman I initially thought that the crowd will subside in a day or two and I was proved wrong. This was the first sign that something big is going to happen. never before (at least in my life) had this kind of response taken place under anybody's leadership. That was India rising(?). Two years have passed. People have risen again like a phoenix from it's ashes. The major difference??? There is no leadership!!! In my opinion this is the first time when when there has been this much agitation without any banner or leadership. This is the agitation of people demanding their safety, of people asking their elected representatives about the rights that has been guaranteed by the constitution. If the elected leaders don't protect the people then people are bound to come on road; it is boud to be a Road Democracy.
This is, mark my words, the beginning. It had to begin somewhere, so better be here. Kudos to students in Delhi and to all the people who came forward in spite of the oppression by the police force. You have set an example for the rest of the nation. Please don't relate it to just this case, try to see the big picture. This is a conclusive proof that people can come forward and ask for their rights directly from their elected representatives. An example has been set. Expect others to follow suit.
Yet another example has been set up, though it can be deemed criminal according to IPC, in Jharkhand in Khunti village where 4 eve-teasers and a rapist were killed by angry mob. Readers' discretion is advised. (link)
There is yet one more part of the solution and that is we should elect the right people. But we elect who is from our caste, religion or just for a bottle of wine and 500 rs. Well this is something that cannot be taught or enforced. Fortunately or unfortunately we have a system which guarantees voters to cast independent votes. Save your rage till next elections. Yes, there will be frauds, there will be riggings, booths will be captured. But mind you, there are as many forces working to prevent these as are working to do these. And yes, still there are politicos which want to do good for the nation, but are under "professional stress" to perform according to other peoples' will.
I hope in 2014 general elections justice will be served.
And as I said in my last post "We forget, and we forget easily"
